Interview by Claire O’Connell
“Sometimes it’s hard to know that we’re good at something, until we actually try it.”
This saying goes especially well for the Head of Customer Service, Arnetia Curtis. It’s hard to believe that the first point of contact for our customers would have once considered herself a shy person. After landing her first job in sales, she slowly began to realize that it was surprisingly easy to talk and even relate to the customers she was helping. Arnetia has worked at Zippy Shell for 3 years and continues to grow in her role at the company.
Let’s take a closer look at what Arnetia is up to these days….
First, I need to know… what song is stuck in your head today?
Coffee (in the morning) by Miguel. If you don’t know it, check it out.
Getting down to business…When did you know you wanted to work in sales?
When I was 18, I worked for a long-distance telemarketing job and it was absolutely terrible! Somehow I stuck around with that company for 5 years. I remember when they asked me to transition to selling mobile phone sales. I was nervous at first, but it turned out that I was on fire! I was not only one of the first people to join the new team, but I also racked up the most sales in the first two months. My sales were continually above expected goals and I felt really confident doing it. I was always very shy in person, I mean very shy! For some reason when I’m behind a phone, I found it easy to talk with people and could relate with them. I’ve been in sales since 1997, so as you can imagine there’s a lot of stories in between, but you get the gist.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
Learning new things. I love to learn everything about the company I work for and working with my team.
What’s the most important thing about working with customers you tell to your team?
Great listening skills and consistent communication with your customers. I don’t just answer their questions like a robot, I work with them to build an understanding and trust with the customers. Great customer service leads to great companies.
That’s some great advice! What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
One thing that my grandmother would always say to me was, “Character is very important, don’t compromise it for anything.” I also really like the motto, “Live every moment, laugh every day, love beyond words.”
What are some items on your bucket list?
There are tons of things on my bucket list, but for one thing I definitely want a Sports Top Harley Davidson motorcycle! After that, I also want to travel to Italy for a week. I say a week, because I hope I make it back once I go, since I plan on eating just about everything!
How about when you’re not in the office?
When I’m not at work, you can find me relaxing with my family, playing basketball with my friends, watching the History Channel and dancing…dancing like nobody’s watching!
Arnetia is the Head of Customer Service. Her responsibilities vary from training the Call Center team to enhancing customer’s experience as they use the company’s services.
