Just because you are selling your home during the holidays doesn’t mean you need to completely change the way you celebrate. While you will have to make some changes, it doesn’t have to be anything that destroys the holiday for you and your family! This time of year can sometimes be stressful enough without worrying about open houses and whether home buyers are going to appreciate your holiday décor!
We’ve compiled a list of tricks to help keep the season bright and full of cheer- regardless of what is going on.
1) Find the right realtor:
Finding a dedicated and hardworking realtor is crucial to help ease the stress of selling your home during the holidays. You want to make sure you are working with someone who is going to be around during the holidays and not just disappear until the new year. Your realtor should be willing to work with you and help keep things as normal as possible. If you are still looking for a realtor, make sure to talk to your friends and family to find someone you know you can trust.
2) Can I still deck the halls?
Of course, you can! There is absolutely no reason why you can’t put your decorations up this year. You just want to make sure your decorations are not masking important details of your home. For example, it might not be a good idea to put a giant inflatable snowman in front of a window blocking a beautiful view of the backyard. You also don’t want to crowd the rooms of your home with a ton of decorations that make rooms feel smaller. When putting up your decorations this year, just make sure you aren’t hindering a sale by covering up any major selling points.
3) Open houses:
Make open houses feel a little more festive by offering up seasonal snacks to visitors. Hot chocolate, cookies, cider and your other favorite dishes are a welcome treat for anyone visiting your home. This helps open houses feel less like business and a little more like a holiday party.
4) Keep yourself busy:
When you have to leave your home for showings and open houses, get the whole family together to participate in fun holiday activities. For instance, if you know you have an open house scheduled- plan for your family to go out and buy your Christmas tree that day. If you get the call that interested buyers are coming for a tour- bring the whole family over to the mall to buy gifts. Instead of feeling like you are being kicked out of your home you will be making the most out of the free time!
5) Don’t be scared to travel:
Just because your home is on the market, doesn’t mean you can’t go away to celebrate. You don’t need to miss out on family time just to sell your home. Talk to your realtor and let them know you will be going away and that they can still show your home while you are away. It might be easier on yourself to leave a show ready home and not have to worry about re-cleaning for visits that whole time.
