Combat Clutter

How to Keep Clutter From Coming Back

You’ve spent the time decluttering your home to be exactly the way you like! But how do you stop the clutter from building back up to where it was again?

Combatting the clutter in your home is a constant everyday battle, but it’s not impossible.

1) Give Everything a Place to Go
I’ve found that the easiest way for me to stay organized is by making sure everything has a place to go. Clutter can easily form when you don’t have a designated spot for something. Then the next time you see something laying around, it will only take a second to put it right where it belongs.

2) Make it Part of Your Everyday Routine
Force yourself into a routine that works for your schedule. For example, while you are waiting for your morning coffee to brew go through yesterdays stack of mail you left sitting on the counter. You can also get in the habit of getting rid of anything you stumble upon in your home that you know you don’t use immediately. If you are looking for something in your utility drawer that you know is broken or not useful anymore, as soon as you find it- get rid of it. It takes a little while to get used to, but then it will slowly become second nature.

3) Force yourself to remember to do something on your list
Have a bag of clothing donations just sitting somewhere in your home? Make sure to place it by the door so the next time you leave, you’ll remember to take it. Do you struggle with clean laundry piling up in your room somewhere? As soon as you take the laundry out of the dryer- place it on your bed. Then, before you go to bed that night, you’ll remember you have to fold and put away your laundry!

4) Schedule major cleanouts for a few times a year
Pick a few times a year that you want to clean out your kitchen, your closet, your garage, anything! Then put those dates on the calendar so you save time for them. It’s a lot easier to follow through when you have scheduled the time to do it.

5) Don’t Be Hard On Yourself
Don’t get discouraged if you fall behind for a few days. Your schedule is bound to fluctuate and you’ll have more or less time to spend on things. Just stay on top of everything as much as you can, anything is better than nothing!
